Chocolate Applesauce Cake

1/2 cup butter or margarine,  softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons baking cocoa
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups unsweetened applesauce TOPPING:
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped pecans
2 tablespoons sugar

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine dry ingredients; add to the creamed mixture alternately with applesauce. Pour into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking pan. Combine topping ingredients; sprinkle over batter. Bake at 175 degrees C for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
